When our good friends Andy & Kat announced they were getting married in Sydney, we jumped at the chance to cater for them. The chosen venue was Andy’s family property in Bilpin in the stunning Blue Mountains. However, when everything was booked & organised, with only 10 days out, disaster struck. Severe bush fires struck the beautiful natural land with devastating effect. Although the family estate was untouched, the couple made the decision to pull the pin altogether for safety reasons.
With only 10 days to go until the big day, they searched desperately for a new retreat to host their 180 guests. The couple, with the help of friends, family & Mr Collins, tackled the almost impossible task of moving the entire wedding, when they managed to secure Newmarket Stables for the festivities, with the breathtaking Strickland House in Vaucluse, hosting the ceremony.
Sydney turned on the weather for the beautiful couple, with the sun splitting the skies over the immaculate harbour landscape. You couldn’t have wished for a more perfect backdrop and the beaming guests certainly agreed. Once the stunning bride & groom had sealed their vows with a kiss, it was time to celebrate, with fruit cocktails, boutique beers & a selection of canapés served by Mr Collins & his dapper gents.
The party then moved onto Newmarket Stables where another decadent setting was waiting. The stables had been completely transformed into a unique, stylish event space, with bright floral blooms and Kat’s signature Dreams in Colour home-wares setting the stage. The roving canapé service began outside in the late afternoon sun inside a quirky fenced off stable area complete with hay bails as seating and wine barrels for bar tops. Jugs of fruity Pimms & gin fizz cocktails, swished in glasses as the elated guests watched the sun go down.
Everyone was then ushered inside into the mammoth main stable yard (affectionately known as ‘The Big Barn’) which had seen a complete design transformation, with 3 long tables set in the middle for dinning & a custom made oak bar staged at the rear entrance. Every inch of wall space was adorned by picture bunting featuring photos of Johnny Walker’s leading man Andy & home-wares queen, Kat with every one of their guests taken over the years – this personal touch further added to just how special & unique this day was.
As guests were seated, a banquet style mains feast was served under festoon lighting hung from the wooden rafters, as acoustic musicians played in the background. Once the speeches had concluded, it was time for Mr Collins to really shine! He rolled out an old wine barrel onto the dance floor, stood it upright and proceeded to place the Tommy Collins signature ‘Cheese Wedding Cake’. Standing at an impressive 70cms tall, with delicately styled foliage & fruit, this cake was most definitely a show stopper!
Now that everyone was suitably stuffed, the music pumped up & Johnny Walker poured, the party was in full swing! So after a rocky start to their dream day, we can safely say that Andy & Kat’s Sydney nuptials turned out to be quite simply, the ‘Interstate Wedding of The Year’!
